Great easy project for a beginner to make a ruffle t shirt!

As soon as the warm weather starts coming, I get in the mood for some new short sleeved shirts 😛 After wearing scarves all winter, sometimes plain t shirts feel so blah and boring. I got these 2 shirts from Sears with surprise points (anyone else a fan of those??) for a total of $1 & was determined to turn them into a cute shirt. With minimal sewing knowledge and an hour’s worth of time, you can make your new favorite summer shirt! 🙂

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 identical t shirts
  • matching thread
  • straight pins

Lay out one of the shirts.

Cut into strips as shown below. These don’t need to be exactly even since they’ll be ruffled.

Next cut those loops open on one side seam, so now you have 5 strips.ruffle shirt diy tutorial upcycled t shirt summer style modest clothes sewing free shirt pattern knit

Next, gather each strip. You’ll do this by choosing the longest stitch on your machine (see the 5.0 on the screen?), or the basting stitch. Sew along one long edge on each strip.ruffle shirt diy tutorial upcycled t shirt summer style modest clothes sewing free shirt pattern knit

Pull on one of the threads hanging off the strip and it will ruffle!

Adjust the length of the strips to what is needed and arrange them on the shirt as seen below.

The bottom of each ruffle should be overlapping the top of the ruffle below it a little bit.

Pin the ruffles on to hold them in place. I like using these straight pins – they make it easy to see the pins while you’re sewing.ruffle shirt diy tutorial upcycled t shirt summer style modest clothes sewing free shirt pattern knit

Sew the ruffles on, careful not to catch other ruffles in the seam.

Trim your thread and it’s finished! A perfect shirt for the warm weather that is feminine and pretty.

  1. So cute! How did you finish off the ruffles on the side under your arm? It looks like you actually opened the long seam down the side and tucked the end into the seam and stitched it back up. Absolutely adorable!!

  2. This is such a beautiful top with a cute color. This is looking amazing on you. I love to wear ruffle designs and want to make it by following your steps. Thanks a lot for sharing.
