DIY Burlap Buffalo Plaid Tree Skirt

BURLAP BUFFALO PLAID CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT

Last year, I switched all my Christmas decor over to the black and white buffalo plaid, burlap, twigs and stumps, flannel, woodsy kind of theme. And did we love it!!!! The whole season just felt so cozy, but still festive. I CANNOT WAIT to get my Christmas decor back out in a few weeks!!

Making these ornaments was one of my favorite things last year!

But I didn’t have a solution for a tree skirt that I felt was perfect for our tree. One of my goals was to make sure I found or made one before the season came again…. and I’m happy to say I have one made and ready to go, plus a quick tutorial to share with you.

My project started with this 60″ diameter burlap tree skirt with a serged edge, from Burlap Fabrics.

This was a big time saver and made the project a breeze!

I purchased 2 yards of buffalo plaid from Hobby Lobby and cut it into 9″ strips (3 strips total).

Then I folded each strip in half and pressed them. I wanted the ‘edge’ of my ruffle to be a folded edge. After sewing the strips together, I then gathered the raw edge with a basting stitch on my sewing machine.

I took the tree skirt and marked with chalk, 5″ from the edge,

And placed my gathered plaid on the line, with the folded edge toward the center (after sewing it on, I pressed it down…. as you’ll see in the next picture). I then sewed along the gathered line. This burlap was very easy to sew with! I didn’t experience any problems.

Lastly, I pressed the ruffle down and steamed out all the fold creases that were in the burlap. This was very easy to do and literally only took a couple of minutes total!
