DIY Colored Bobby Pins

Colored bobby pins are such a cute hair accessory! I love adding a little pop of color to my hairstyle 🙂

Here’s a quick and easy way to make your own colored bobby pins . . .

What you’ll need:

  • bobby pins (of course)
  • any color of nail polish
  • piece of cardstock (or an index card)

Start by sliding your bobby pins onto your paper. I made a set of 2 pins of 3 different colors so I slid 6 bobby pins onto my cardstock paper. Slide another piece of paper under the piece with the bobby pins to prevent polish from getting on the table.

Next, pick a nail polish color. If you have jars of polish that you don’t use much, this is a perfect way to use them – or if you want your nails and bobby pins to match, pick your current color of nail polish 🙂 I had some sparkly, dark polish from Julep that I had never used so I dug that out of the recesses of my drawer and used it. All you need to do is brush the polish on the bobby pins . . . so easy! Make sure you paint the entire side of the pin; I like to go under the little part that sticks up off the end, too to make sure the whole thing is painted.

I used the Julep Coco, Ciara, and Ryan (all from the ‘It Girl’ collection) for my first set . . . I think these will look so pretty in the fall! They’re dark brown, dark green, and sparkly dark purple . . .

I did a second set of Julep Flora (‘It Girl’) and Vicki (‘Classic with a Twist’) for a more spring/summer collection – I love the coral and bright purple colors together!

After I brushed the polish on my bobby pins, I let them dry for about 20 minutes (while I went for a quick bike ride). The polish really doesn’t take long to dry at all, so this really is a quick project!

If you want to paint the back of your bobby pins as well, flip over your paper or index card and brush them again and let the second side dry . . .

Slide the bobby pins off the paper and ta-dah . . . you’re finished! This is such a fun project to do with your little girl as well . . . and just in time for back to school, too! I would love to experiment and try stripes or polka dots! What about you?? Have you ever painted your own bobby pins?
