Ok, now that you’ve seen how gorgeous a “modernized” tissue box cover can be, let’s get started! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Shabby Chic and Chevron all the way!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

*Any type of 1/4″ wood:

          2 pieces cut to 4 5/8″ x 5 5/8″ (sides)

          2 pieces cut to 5 1/8″ x 5 5/8″ (opposite sides)

          1 piece cut to 5 7/16″ x 5 1/4″ (top)

*Gorilla Wood Glue

*Sandpaper

*Paint

*These printable chevron patterns (ChevronTOP, ChevronSIDES) and a pencil

*Sharpie oil-based paint marker

WHAT TO DO FIRST

To begin making your Shabby Chic Chevron Tissue Box Cover, you’ll need your pieces of wood cut first. I had a random scrap of press board that I used, but you can use whatever you like! You’ll need 5 pieces total – 2 wider sides, 2 thinner sides, and the top. (2 pieces cut to 4 5/8″ x 5 5/8″, 2 pieces cut to 5 1/8″ x 5 5/8″, 1 piece cut to 5 7/16″ x 5 1/4″)

I was fortunate to have my dad at my house when I was working on this project, so he (a master craftsman) cut the pieces for me in no time! ๐Ÿ™‚ If you have a friend or family member that works with wood, get their help and ask them to cut these for you! I could tell that my dad was more than happy to help out. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The next thing I did was use my all-time favorite wood glue — seriously, this stuff holds things together like you would NOT. BE.LIEVE. — and put the tissue box cover together. The height of your side pieces is 5 5/8,” so be sure they are aligned the correct way. The wider side pieces are the outside pieces, and the thinner side pieces are the inside pieces. It should be almost square when you have the 4 sides together. Then add the top, turning to fit it so the edges are flush with your side pieces.

WHAT TO DO AFTER YOUR WOOD PIECES ARE PUT TOGETHER

Once you’ve assembled the tissue box cover, you’ll need to cut a hole in the top. This may be the trickiest part. Thankfully, my dad did this for me. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I used the top throw-away-circle of a Kleenex box to trace a good-sized oval/circle on top. Then, my dad drilled a big hole in the top so he could stick a jigsaw in and follow the pencil lines.

At this point, you should sand it down really well to smooth down where you connected the pieces. I also used some wood filler on a few spots that had gaps, just to make it all nice and smooth.

It’s time to paint!! This is where it starts to look shabby chic! You can get creative and choose any combination of colors! For this shabby chic tissue box cover, I painted it a solid taupe and then dry-brushed a tiny bit of white over it after it was completely dry. {I explained the dry-brushing process back in step 3 of my Rustic Trough Centerpiece post.}

There are so many options that would look gorgeous! I can picture navy with a gold paint chevron, or rose with a white paint chevron, …..

FINISHING TOUCHES

Now, for the chevron. You, of course, could do anything to your tissue box cover at this point: polka dots, stripes, solid….

I’ve made it easy for you by creating these printable chevron patterns – SIDES chevron pattern & TOP chevron pattern – for the sides of your tissue box cover. This pattern connects at each turn, so you don’t have to worry about having half a zigzag run off the edge of the sides. Be sure to print at 100%!

Once you’ve printed your chevron patterns, you’ll need to snip along the zigzag lines ALMOST to the end, but don’t cut through…..like this…..

Then, simply use masking tape to attach your chevron pattern to a side of your tissue box cover, and peel back one strip at a time and trace, until the entire pattern is on the side. This does take a bit of time, so turn on some music while you work! ๐Ÿ™‚  I did this late one night while my kids were sleeping and I could relax with some quiet music. Very therapeutic. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once you’ve traced your design onto the entire tissue box cover, grab a Sharpie oil-based paint marker (markers make this step so easy!) and “paint” in your design! I used silver since my base color was “cold”….if you paint with a warmer color, gold is better.

How beautiful does this Easy DIY Shabby Chic Tissue Box Cover look?!?

I’m in love with this and have so many ideas for other designs that would look perfect in different areas of my house! I just need my dad to come over and cut some more pieces for me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

These are also GREAT gifts – handmade, shabby chic, and customized to match your family member or friend’s decor! So perfect!
