Donkey’s Tail succulents (also called Burro’s Tail succulent) are one of my favorite “filler” succulents. They add a different dimension to succulent arrangements, so when I made my Pizza Pan Sign (it has a gorgeous display of felt succulents on it!), I knew I needed to add some of these Donkey’s Tail felt succulents to it.

If you’re not familiar with this type of succulent, here’s a beautiful photo from The Spruce – they have a great post (read HERE) on how to care for and propagate Donkey’s Tail succulents! If you grow succulents (I do! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ) then I know you’ll like the information they have over there.

Here’s what you need to make Donkey’s Tail Felt Succulents:

  • Light green felt, cut into 1/4″ strips.
  • White or light green thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors

By the way, did you see our video on making felt succulents? They pair nicely with these ones!

Here’s how easy it is to make Donkey’s Tail Felt Succulents:

Step one, cut your felt into 1/4″ strips.

I had 8″x12″ sheets of felt, so I cut up one whole piece. But if you’re using felt that you purchased by the yard, just cut up a small amount – you’ll see that it doesn’t take much.

Step two, cut each strip into 2.5″-3″ pieces.

(For a single Donkey’s Tail felt succulent, you’ll need 15-20 of these small pieces.)

I was able to get 5 Donkey’s Tails out of this one 8″x12″ felt sheet.

Step 3, take a piece of the felt that you’ve cut — fold it into thirds as pictured below. โฌ‡๏ธ

Taking a needle and thread, secure this first base piece of your donkey’s tail by knotting one end of your thread, drawing the thread through, back down, and then back up. (See photos below.)

*If this sounds complicated, don’t worry about going up, down, and back up – I just do it to reinforce and make it a little more secure. Just knot your thread and draw it through like the first photo.*

Next step, fold another small strip of felt into thirds, then thread it on!

Just continue threading on folded felt, and alternate the direction of the piece each time (you can do this as you go or just twist them into place afterwards).

(So a Donkey’s Tail Felt Succulent is basically folded pieces of felt stacked together and stitched through the center – really easy!)

When you get 15-20 pieces threaded on, you can do something different for the final top piece so that you don’t see any thread or knots.

I cut a 1″ piece from my strip and rolled it so that it’s smaller than all the other pieces.

Then, when I threaded it on, I didn’t stitch through the top part – just through the bottom 2 layers, then I knotted it securely.
