Sometimes it can be hard to put things together on floating shelves that look stylish while not costing a fortune!

My sisters and I have always considered it FUN to find ways to cut costs by DIY-ing or thrifting (clothes, decor, gifts, etc.), so my mind instantly goes that direction when I re-style my shelves each season. 😉

I don’t like spending too much money on decor for my shelves, so I’ve come up with inexpensive ways to style floating shelves this Christmas.

3 TIPS: How to Style Floating Shelves for Christmas

1. Choose a theme

I’m all about buffalo plaid this year! And I love the traditional Christmas red, so red and black plaid (with some evergreen, of course) was what I chose.

I also want my decor to look comfy-cozy and home-y….not ultra-modern.

2. Choose a center focal piece.

I chose to frame a buffalo plaid printable from our collection to pop into a frame I already had.

This is my focal point which will be placed in the center of my shelves.

3. See what versatile pieces you already have that can be re-purposed for Christmas.

First I try to see what vases, cups, frames, etc. I have that I can either cover, add ribbon and evergreen to, or even spray paint!

Then I can decide on new pieces that I’d like to make.

This cute piece is just one of my white coffee mugs – I tied ribbon and bits of evergreen onto it and added a white candle that I use for every season.

How I Styled My Floating Shelves for Christmas

Here’s what I used on my shelves this season:

1. Fake gifts

These pretty gifts are just empty boxes! This is such a budget-friendly option that adds a nice pop of color and ribbon.

Fake gifts are an easy,  inexpensive way to fill in empty spots on your shelves.

2. Mini evergreen trees

My little tree is from IKEA – only $3.99! I added a band of 4″ wide burlap, and a little gold trim at the base (with hot glue, of course) ;-).

These trees are perfect for styling shelves!

3. Re-purposed frames

These $2 frames are usually displayed on my shelves with printable verses or sayings in them. (Check the Dollar Store for $1 frames!)

For my Christmas display, I just put red paper in them and wrapped twine around it a few times, taping it down on the back.

I used mini clothespins to attach the photos – easy and inexpensive!

4. Re-purposed jars

If you have mason jars (or even pickle jars or other food jars), you can easily spruce these up to match your holiday decor!

For my mason jar, I thinned down some white paint and swirled it around the inside of my jar until it was completely coated.

When the paint was dry, I hot glued a strip of plaid fabric around it (ribbon, burlap, or twine is great, too!).

5. Use free, outdoor elements (like pine cones and fresh evergreen)

In the photo above, I used pine cones to fill my re-purposed mason jar.

I simply attached my pine cones to wire stems and made a “bouquet”!

6. Use free printables

To add a little more free buffalo plaid to my shelves, I decided to design this printable buffalo plaid Christmas tree!

Of course it’s available for YOU to use as well, so just CLICK HERE to open the PDF.

You’ll need to print 5 of these (if you want it to be fuller, just print a couple more to add in).

Cut them out, fold them in half right sides together, and glue the halves together back to back.

Everything else on my shelves was either gifted to me or purchased at a discount store for pennies!

Once you start looking around your house at the things you already have, I’m sure you’ll come up with ways to re-purpose them!

I hope this post gave you some ideas and inspiration for decorating your floating shelves for Christmas!
