I’ll show you the elements I chose for my headband, but really, these rosettes can be made with literally any material. And instead of pearls, you could accent with buttons, colored beads, or a mini pom pom. The options are endless! Be creative!

I used:

  • small square of ivory shiny satin
  • small square of cream lace
  • sew-on pearls (they have a hole that you can put a needle through)
  • baby pink stretchy headband elastic (Hobby Lobby has a GREAT selection of these elastics at a great price!)

First, cut the elastic to the desired length. I would cut at 12″ for a newborn, 13″ for 0-6 months, 14″ for 6-12 months . . . anything past that, you may want to measure the actual head or guess-timate the size needed.

Next, cut the satin into a circle, and the lace into a bigger circle. I grabbed a couple cups and traced around them to make this step super fast & simple.

Now you’ll take a needle and thread, and sew a large running stitch all the way around the circle as shown. You DON’T have to be a sewing expert for this. Just thread your needle, knot the end, push it through the back of the circle, and just weave it in and out all the way around.

When you get all the way around the circle, pull it tight to bunch up the circle.

Now flatten it out so that all the “raw” frayed edges are in the center. Tack down any edges that are sticking up. “Tacking” just means to push the needle through any of those edges to connect it to the back of the rosette.

Add the pearls to the center.

Do the same thing to the lace circle.

Now layer the lace rosette and satin rosette together and tack them.

Sew or hot glue the flowers on to the headband, connecting the headband ends at the same time.

Ta-da!

Now that you know how to make these rosettes, you can make them out of any fabric (think wool, felt, burlap, taffeta) – and add them to ANYthing. Belts, purses, necklines of dresses, and of course headbands . . . . adds a unique accent with so little effort.

So go be creative and make something pretty 🙂

  1. Pretty and easy to make which I embrace! As for the measurements, do you make them smaller than the head measurements or exactly the head measurements? That is the piece that confuses me. If smaller, how much smaller? TIA!!
