DIY Pallet Wood Headboard – Easy Afternoon Project that looks like it took weeks!
A couple months ago, our church was getting some TLC, and the old cedar fence behind the church got torn down. Thankfully my father-in-law knew I might like to do something with it and offered it to me before it got thrown away.
This wood was such a gem. The natural coloring couldn’t get any better, and we had been talking about making a rustic headboard. I had seen some on Pinterest that I kind of liked, but none that I wanted an exact replica of. We came up with this one and I think it turned out perfectly!
First we used 1x1s to build a basic frame.
As you can see, the size of the frame we did was 3×6 feet to fit our bed. You will want to make your frame whatever size you want the finished headboard to be. For the center post, we used 2 1x1s so that we could attach all the diagonal boards to those 2 center pieces.
Next we marked and cut the old cedar wood fence planks for the herringbone pattern.
Follow the procedure on the diagram above until your entire frame is covered with the diagonal pieces of wood.
Then we attached the diagonal wood pieces to the frame.
After all of your diagonal pieces are attached, it should look like this.
We decided to frame it in with some more fence wood.
And to finish it off, we sprayed it with a clear protective coat.
Then we mounted it to our wall with basic mounting hardware.
I added our super easy Pallet Shelves to the bedroom decor as well.
And of course I will add our Christmas Sign for the holidays as well!

Can you show a little more detail on how you mounted this to the wall?
I just found this and it’s exactly what i want. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I love how it turned out. I would have like to see a picture of the back though, just to make sure I get it exactly like yours.
Hi, I was just wondering how easy it is to attach this headboard to a metal frame? I’ve looked at a lot of DIY headboards & think this idea is amazing! I was hoping that there may be a way to attach it to. metal frame instead of mounting it to the wall? Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated! Thank you.
