Recently, I painted a chevron stripes design onto a desktop I was making for my boys. I really didn’t want to eyeball the design because it would drive me *crazy* to have them a little off.

Sooo…I figured out the simple steps to painting a perfect chevron and wrote them down so that I could share them with you! It’s easy, really….just follow these simple steps.

SIMPLE STEPS TO PAINTING A PERFECT CHEVRON

1. Paint the piece that you are working on with one of the colors that you want to include in your chevron stripes (the lightest color of the ones you are using is best for the base coat).

2. Mark the center of your project with intersecting horizontal and vertical lines {as pictured}. Using a protractor, mark a 45-degree angle from the exact center of your project {as pictured} on both the left and right sides of the center. How to Paint Chevron Stripes | How to Paint Chevron | Chevron Design | Chevron Decor | Chevron Decor Ideas | Chevron Desk

3. Use a masking tape that is as wide as you want your chevron stripes to be. Place masking tape from the center of your project along the 45-degree angle that you marked.

4. Measure the width of the masking tape that you place on the 45-degree angle (this will be wider than the actual width of the tape on the roll when it’s angled). Mine was 2.5 inches {see picture above}.

5. Now mark this width (for example, for me it was 2.5″) all along your horizontal and vertical center lines that you marked in step #2 *AND* along the top and bottom edges.

6. Use masking tape to connect the marks that you just made. (I used an X-ACTO Knife to cut my tape perfectly straight on that center line.)

7. Repeat this process on the other side so your design is (mostly) finished.

8. Once you’ve done this all the way to the edges, you’ll still have an empty triangle in the center to fill in. To mark these lines, you’ll need to place your protractor on the edge of your piece (on one of those marks you made previously) and mark a 45-degree angle in toward the center. Place tape along this line.

9. Once you’ve taped off one side, you can easily tape off the opposite side by connecting the top edge marks to the masking tape in the center {see picture}.

Now you’re ready to paint!! (First give that masking tape an extra rub to seal the edges so that the paint doesn’t seep under it!) 🙂

Use more than one color for the other stripes if you like! My boys’ room has 3 main colors, so I wanted to get all 3 onto this desktop. It turned out so sharp and precise, which is what I wanted! No eyeballing these things for me, or the OCD in me goes crazy when I spy those little fluctuations in stripe size, haha!

In an older post, I talked about how easy it was to make this custom-size desk for an unused (& small) space in my boys’ room. It’s crazy how easy it was!
