What do I need to make frozen avocado?

  • ripe avocados – do you know how to tell if your avocados are ripe? Check the color of the skin. It should be dark green to black. The darker the skin, the riper the avocado. The skin should also feel bumpy. Try gently pressing the skin with your thumb. A ripe avocado should yield to gentle pressure, but not leave an indentation or feel mushy. If it feels too mushy then it is overripe.
  • lemon juice – either fresh or bottled will work great!
  • plastic wrap
  • ziplock bags – we love these bulk freezer bags from Amazon!! Such a price saver!

Some commonly asked questions about avocados:

Does freezing avocados ruin them?

No! I would not use them in fresh salads or as slices on avocado toast or sandwiches since the texture is compromised when freezing. But using them in guacamole, smoothies, baking recipes, and smashed avocado toast works perfectly.

What is the best way to thaw frozen avocados?

Wholesome Yum says “How to thaw frozen avocado chunks, slices, or puree: Remove pieces from the freezer and thaw at room temperature for 30-60 minutes. You can also place in the refrigerator overnight.”

Can I use frozen avocado for guacamole?

For Freezing says “Frozen avocados are great for guacamole. As a matter of fact, frozen avocados are just as good as fresh, unfrozen avocados when used in smoothies, shakes, and dips. To ensure that the quality remains the same, it is best to puree or cut the avocados then spray them with lemon juice before freezing.”

Can you microwave a frozen avocado?

Microwave Meal Prep says “If you need to use microwave, choose the defrost or low power setting. For best result, nuke for 30 second increments to thaw frozen avocados in the microwave.”
